Eric Goldman found the season finale of FX’s The Americans “awesome”, ending as it did “with a terrifically exciting episode, putting Phillip and Elizabeth in greater danger than ever and setting up plenty to deal with in Season 2.” Alan Sepinwall said the finale worked well as an episode of the series, but not as much as a season ender. Matthew Gilbert thought 13 episodes was too much, preferring 10 instead, though he found Keri Russell “eminently watchable” and Matthew Rhys “an exciting and faceted leading man.” AVTV Club’s Genevieve Koski and Todd VanDerWerff completed their duet review series with VanDerWerff comparing the show favorably to Mad Men in its endless build-up of emotions but noting that as a result, both can be “unbearable to watch.”
Plus: Both Sepinwall (here) and Mo Ryan (here) talk with producer Joe Weisberg about the finale and the season as a whole.
